QNAP TBS-464: A new super compact NAS to put in your living room

Main features

This NAS server called QNAP TBS-464, or also known as «NASbook SSD» is ideal for modern offices and even to put it directly in the living room where it will be in view because it has a really elegant and compact design, so it will go unnoticed in our living room. This model has very advanced multimedia capabilities, ideal to satisfy all the video needs that we have. The first thing you should know is that this NAS has the QTS 5.0 operating system with all the security, optimization, and speed improvements, so you will have the latest from the manufacturer.

CPU and RAM characteristics

This new NASbook has an Intel Celeron N5105 or Intel Celeron N5095 processor, which are Quad-Core at a speed of 2.0GHz but that can increase up to 2.9GHz when more power is required. The N5095 model is faster than the N5105, therefore, we recommend you see which processor is better. This processor has a 64-bit x86 architecture, an integrated graphics processor with Intel UHD Graphics, it also has a floating-point unit, hardware encryption acceleration with AES-NI, and it even has hardware accelerated transcoding, ideal to take advantage of.

This server is sold with 8GB of DDR4 SO-DIMM RAM but it cannot be expanded, it will be the maximum memory you have. Regarding the FLASH memory, it has 4GB as usual in the servers of the manufacturer QNAP, this memory is used as protection of the double boot operating system.

Storage

This NAS being so compact, it has a total of four slots for NVMe 1.3 SSDs, therefore, we will have all-flash storage, we will not have hard drives in this NAS server. The positive part of having all SSDs is that it will be very fast, it will not make any noise from the movement of the hard drives, and also, it will not heat at all compared to the hard drives. Of course, small heatsinks will be installed on these SSDs to lower their operating temperature even more. The QTS 5.0 operating system will allow us to configure a storage set of all SSD units, in this way, the performance that we will achieve will be simply magnificent.

Unfortunately, having flash-only storage means sacrificing storage space, because SSDs do not have high capacities like current hard drives, in addition, the price that we will have to pay for having an SSD will be clearly higher than if they were hard drives of the same capacity, therefore, we must take it into account.

Connectivity

The connectivity of this NAS server is very complete, the first thing we have to say is that it incorporates a network card with two 2.5G Multigigabit ports at 2.5Gbps. The QTS 5.0 operating system will allow us to configure a Link Aggregation, so we can achieve a total bandwidth of 5Gbps speed. This model allows Wake on LAN and uses Jumbo Frames.

Other important features are that it incorporates a total of 3 USB 2.0 ports and 2 USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports (at 5Gbps), and thanks to these USB ports we can connect an external hard drive to expand the internal capacity of the NAS server easily and quickly, and we can even put a DAS from the manufacturer QNAP to extend the internal storage.

Other features

Thanks to the incorporation of an Intel processor with GPU integrated into the processor, we will have video output through two HDMI 2.0 ports. This port supports a resolution of 4K at 60Hz, therefore, we can connect our TV to the NAS to play multimedia content. We also have an infrared sensor to use a remote control like the RM-IR004 that we already know from other NAS server models.

This model measures 30mm high, 230mm wide, and 165mm deep, with a weight of 0.8kg, the maximum power consumption of this equipment is approximately 28W, therefore, it is a piece of low consumption equipment.

As you have seen, this QNAP TBS-464 model is a really interesting device to use as a multimedia player in our home and to have all the functionalities of a QNAP NAS server with the QTS 5.0 operating system.
